Projects in 2019
Polihali Dam Lesotho Physical Model study (TCTA)-165 m high dam(2019)
Crocodile River, Mokolo Crocodile River (West) Augmentation Project Phase 2A - Vlieëpoort abstraction works on the Crocodile River, South Africa (2019/21)
Hydrodynamic modelling of the flood and sediment dynamics for the design of the 5.5 m3/s (475 ML/d) river abstraction works. Hydraulic design of the weir and abstraction works with sediment management features, as well as the sediment trap. Environmental Study: Baseline Sediment and mitigation measures. Client: Nyeleti & TCTA.
Berg River losses study, South Africa (2019/20)
Hydrodynamic modelling to quality the Berg River water mass balance during the irrigation season, from Berg River Dam to the estuary over about 200 km. Considered recorded daily irrigation releases into the river and farm abstractions, raw water abstraction at towns and treated sewage return flows, evaporation, rainfall, evapotranspiration, and seepage. Client: Western Cape Department of Agriculture.
Klein Brak and Groot Brak Estuary Floodlines study, South Africa (2019/20)
Flood hydrology, flood routing by 2D hydrodynamic modelling with movable bed conditions and breaching of the mouth berm, modelling of long and wind generated short wave penetration, future climate change impacts and wave runup. Client: Bigen Africa & DEA&DP.
Mogalakwena Mine settler hydraulic design, Mokopane, South Africa (2019/20)
Hydrodynamic modelling in 3D of the sediment transport through three existing settlers based on extensive field work sediment sampling. Complete redesign of the existing settlers on the same footprint with long concrete canals to deal effectively with coarse silt sediment sizes from the TSFs during extreme storm events. Study findings presented to the Anglo American Group worldwide. Client: iX Engineers and Anglo American Platinum.
Philippi Sewer, Cape Town, South Africa (2019/20)
Detail hydraulic design of the proposed new 1.1 m diameter sewer of 10 km length and 1 m3/s discharge which will be constructed in a densely populated urban area, by using micro tunnelling at a depth of 3 to 9m deep. Due to the flat slopes in the Cape flats of typically 1:2000 sedimentation of the sewer could be problem and therefore special measures were taken to deal with sediment: a sand trap to remove > 0.3 mm sediment, a number of vortex grit traps to remove > 3 mm sediment, 1D modelling of the pipe hydraulics to identify problem zones with sediment deposition, a drop structure and splitter structure. Client: Ingerop & City of Cape Town.
Mthatha River abstraction works at Coffee Bay for potable use, South Africa (2019)
Hydraulic design of a new small river abstraction works without a weir near the mouth of the Mthatha River. 2D hydrodynamic modelling of the river flood flow patterns and sediment dynamics, considering future climate change, MET-Ocean data, long and short wave open mouth penetration, wave runup and sedimentation to identify the best site for the abstraction works. Client: Aurecon & OR Tambo municipality.
